‘Honesty the best policy’ As Scot Wins £50,000 Jackpot
December 28, 2017
A Scottish man won the £50,000 jackpot on Betfred’s virtual horse racing game just minutes after handing in £30 which he found at an ATM machine in an Asda supermarket.
Colin Banks bet just £1.50 on the Lucky 15 virtual horse race, and beat odds of 372,000/1 while playing in a Betfred shop in Motherwell, Scotland.
Banks was shopping in Asda with his daughter just moments before the lucky win and saw £30 in an ATM which he handed to a supermarket worker.
“They say honesty is the best policy…and it certainly was for me!” said the Scot.
“I have been having a go on virtual racing for six months but this is easily my biggest win. It is amazing really to win so much from just a £1.50 bet.”
Virtual racing can be played on a number of different online casinos as well as street bookmakers, and has been around since 2005. There are also virtual football, virtual dog racing, virtual motorsport variants, along with several other virtual sports.
The racing is a visual interpretation of a computerised draw. The lower the odds, the more numbers the horse has in the random draw.
“I have a big family and I’m now going to make sure we all have a brilliant time this Christmas, the best we as a family have ever had,” he added.
“I was curious and went back into the supermarket on Sunday and the same member of staff at the self-service checkout area was on duty who I had handed the £30 to and she said the lad had been back in and was very grateful. I suppose one good turn deserves another.”
Virtual games are often favoured by those punters who are less knowledgeable about the intricacies of the different sports, and those who want to bet on games or races at a time when a real-life event isn’t taking place.
The virtual gambling industry is also more regulated than traditional sports betting and relies less on human error than real life sport.
Betfred owner Fred Done said, “Christmas has come early for Colin and it won’t be virtual but real for sure. Congratulations on emptying my pocket so quickly with such a tiny stake!
“This was one of the biggest virtual horse racing wins in our fifty-year history.”
